Synopsis

The iconic Joe Allen restaurant sits in the heart of theatre-land in both Broadway and the West End and is an exciting dining experience with its infamous 'secret' burger - always available but never on the menu. With the brick walls adorned with posters of classic musical and stage productions you couldn't fail to enjoy the buzz and atmosphere in the subterranean restaurant, whether you've popped in for brunch, lunch, or a pre- or post-theatre dinner, or just a quick drink. This book seeks to celebrate both classic restaurants in one place, to honour the 40th anniversary of the London Joe's and enjoy the unashamedly American food served daily. Collected here are 100 recipes from both restaurants, including the classic hamburger, lobster and crab roll and braised beef brisket sandwich from Broadway and Joe Allen hot dogs, spiced baby back ribs and superfood salad from the West End. Imagery of the two restaurants sits alongside stunning food photography, showing the very best of this classic American institution.

Joe Allen first opened his iconic restaurant in May 1965 and it quickly became an established part of Broadway, filled with actors, producers, directors and hangers-on. In 1977 Joe Allen opened a mirror image of his New York site in the centre of the West End, again offering a unique dining experience where the waiters were wannabe actors and the cast and crew of West End productions used it as their own canteen. A lot has changed since those early days, but the restaurant still remains committed to providing a quality experience at a reasonable price, and is engrained in life in two of the world's best theatre districts. Joe Allen serves brunch, lunch and dinner and is open for drinks 7 days a week. joeallenrestaurant.com / @JoeAllenNYC joeallen.co.uk / @JoeAllenWC2
