Synopsis

Everything you need to teach grammar in the primary classroom.

What is the subjunctive mood? And when do you use a semi-colon? Are these questions that you, as a teacher, are afraid to ask? Cue this book! Written by two experienced teachers, The Grammar Book provides everything you need to teach grammar at primary level. Covering what you need to know as well as practical ideas to enliven your teaching, this book will make grammar fun and engaging - for both the pupils and for you too!

Written in Zoe and Tim Paramour's funny, frank and reassuring style, this definitive guide is all about the importance of teaching grammar as a tool for writing, not as an 'extra' and certainly not as a boring lesson. Instead, the ideas presented are linked to a range of National Curriculum units, with original short texts through which the teaching of grammar is used to support the delivery of the wider English curriculum. All teaching resources can also be downloaded from the companion website.

Each chapter covers a different element of grammar and provides you with everything you need to know as well as teaching ideas, cross-curricular links and resources, making The Grammar Book a must-have resource for teaching grammar effectively at primary level.

Zoe Paramour worked her way up from NQT to Assistant Headteacher in five years. She has worked in a number of very different schools and has held a variety of posts. Zoe is currently a middle leader in a primary school in North London. She is also a freelance writer and journalist specialising in education and politics, as well as the founder of the award-winning blog The Girl on the Piccadilly Line. She writes for a number of national publications, including the Independent, The Huffington Post, The IB Times and The New Statesman. Tim Paramour was Deputy Headteacher of a large primary school in North London until August 2016. In 2017, he wrote and performed a play about primary education that ran in theatres in and around London, including the Lyric Hammersmith and the Oxford Playhouse, before returning to teaching Year 5. Tim regularly blogs about education at www.timparamour.com and has written for the Independent, Mumsnet and the TES.
