Synopsis

* THE NO. 1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER *

`It made me cry. It made me think. It made me laugh. It encouraged me to appreciate this most underappreciated of professions more than ever' Adam Kay, author of This is Going to Hurt

Christie Watson was a nurse for twenty years. Taking us from birth to death and from A&E to the mortuary, The Language of Kindness is an astounding account of a profession defined by acts of care, compassion and kindness.

We watch Christie as she nurses a premature baby who has miraculously made it through the night, we stand by her side during her patient's agonising heart-lung transplant, and we hold our breath as she washes the hair of a child fatally injured in a fire, attempting to remove the toxic smell of smoke before the grieving family arrive.

In our most extreme moments, when life is lived most intensely, Christie is with us. She is a guide, mentor and friend. And in these dark days of division and isolationism, she encourages us all to stretch out a hand.

Staff Choice

I loved this book but I must warn you that it will make you cry and it will make you angry but most of all it will make you appreciate even more the unsung heroes of the NHS - the nurses and, that very unfashionable quality, kindness.

Jasper, Buying Team

There’s a gentleness of spirit in this medical memoir that you don’t always find in the genre. Most are written by doctors, surgeons, consultants - no matter how human the tales there’s often still a distance, we read about their careers, their anecdotes, their successes and failures. In The Language of Kindness, Christie Watson tells us about her nursing practice, from the heart. The importance of empathy, the value of caring and creating time and space for small words or tasks that bring comfort is evident on every page. She explores what it means to connect, not just with patients but their families too. Her own experience as the relative of a terminally ill patient brings an added perspective to this deeply humane, compassionate story. And it’s more than that, it’s a blueprint for a kinder and more patient society.
