They left the bodies in the trees so someone would do something.

The village of Katra, in Uttar Pradesh, in India. Teenagers Padma and Lalli were inseparable, and they were the ideal daughters. Helping in the fields, never straying too far from the house, always seeking permission, never doing anything that would bring dishonour. And then one night they went missing, and the next day they were found dead, hanging from the branches of a mango tree.

The village became a tangled web of wild accusations, news teams, successive failed investigations, posturing politicians and rumours—as the family blamed a rival caste, stories changed, evidence was destroyed and the image of the girls went viral. There were so many questions: Who is guilty? Who can be believed? What happened to the girls? And will anyone do anything about it?

From journalist and author Sonia Faleiro comes The Good Girls, an investigation into the real-life deaths of two girls in rural India in 2014—a shocking case that brought the attention of the nation, and beyond, to Katra Sadatgani. And, as Faleiro shows, brings to light the reality of so many comparable places—the poverty, prejudice, rivalry, tradition, corruption, incompetence and politics that swirl, ceaselessly, and the women who are most often the victims.

Assembling a sprawling ensemble of characters, and moving from close, novelistic proximity to the wider social and political landscape, Faleiro’s masterful narrative non-fiction deftly reconstructs the events of a profoundly convoluted case—peeling back layer upon layer of often conflicting testimony and taking us through the failures of the overburdened, underresourced apparatus that was meant to deliver justice.

The Good Girls weaves its way from mass privation to the highest office of a vast, vastly imbalanced hierarchy, upending myths about modern India and bringing damning statistics to bear. It’s as gripping as the very best of true crime, told through scene after scene of often shocking details, and is driven by the desire to make known the lives of the overlooked, the shunned, the cheated, the disenfranchised—and women most of all.
