Media Diversified: Freedom of Speech vs Suppression of Dissent

Wednesday 10th April 2019 7pm - 8pm 107 Charing Cross Road Chargeable Event

Media Diversified presents an evening of discussion with journalist and author Shelina Janmohamed, activist and academic Dr Adam Elliott-Cooper, editor and publisher Margaret Busby and academic Dr Rizwaan Sabir examining the the discourse around free speech and the role privilege has to play in the public forum.

In response to the backlash to the initial title of a recent Academy of Ideas panel event, ‘Is rising ethnic diversity a threat to the West?’, Media Diversified looks to examine the current sociopolitical climate that encourages the platforming of 'extreme' views, the inequality of so-called 'free speech' and how both can be used as tools that suppress writers and voices of colour and dissent whilst privileging the white mainstream media.

With Shelina Janmohamed author of Love in a Headscarf and Generation M: Young Muslims Changing the World, activist and academic Dr Adam Elliott-Cooper, Margaret Busby OBE, editor of new global anthology New Daughters of Africa and academic Dr Rizwaan Sabir Media Diversified looks to take this increasingly fraught debate offline and into the real space.

The panel discussion will be followed by a Q&A with all involved.
