Spomenik Monument Database

Wednesday 26th September 2018 7pm - 8pm 107 Charing Cross Road Literary Event, Signing, Chargeable Event

Donald Niebyl explores the fractured history of the war-torn Yugoslav region through the 'Spomeniks' left behind, photographing and cataloguing these strange structures to create his blog and new book The Spomenik Monument Database.

‘Spomenik’—the Serbo-Croat/Slovenian word for ‘monument’—refers to a series of memorials built in Tito’s Republic of Yugoslavia from the 1960’s-1990’s as symbols of a classless, forward–looking, post-war socialist society while marking the horror of the occupation and celebrating the defeat of Axis forces during World War II.

For his Spomenik Monument Database Donald Niebyl retraces years of expeditions across the Balkans to bring together more than eighty of these stunning Brutalist monuments in an attempt to capture the political and cultural significance of the society that built them.

The event will consist of a talk and presentation around a selection of these images followed by a Q&A.

Tickets: £8 standard / £5 Student or Foyalty member*. When purchasing a Student or Foyalty ticket, you'll need to bring a valid in-date Student card or Foyalty card with you.
