Foyles Notes

Signed and Numbered First Edition

Ten years on from her seismic essay Men Explain Things to Me, we’re ecstatic to welcome to our shelves a new volume of essays from feminist icon and master of non-fiction Rebecca Solnit—available now in a signed, numbered first edition of just 500 copies, available exclusively in the UK to Foyles.

From police shootings to protests, from gentrification to death row, from Trump to—well, Trump—Call Them by Their True Names brings to task the social violence of politics, misogyny and climate change. There’s tragedy here, yes, but in defining the issues of our age—in calling them by their true names—Solnit brings readers together in pursuit of a common language, of empathy and of hope.

A signed, numbered first edition of just 500 copies

Call Them By Their True Names is provoking, eye-opening, sobering and hopeful. Solnit explores social and political hot topics, such as climate change, gentrification, the death penalty, and the rise of far-right politics. There’s plenty to be rageful about, but Solnit never lets you wallow in this emotion. Her message is ultimately one of hope, but hope as an active not passive force. There’s hope in action; even small actions can have a big impact - ripples that can take years for their full impact to become apparent. This is an extraordinary and essential collection of essays.
