TA First Translation Prize

The TA First Translation Prize was founded in 2017 by British writer, editor and translator, Daniel Hahn with his share of the winnings from the International Dublin Literary Award for his translation of A General Theory of Oblivion, by José Eduardo Agualusa. The aim of the prize is to recognise new talent in the translation profession – an arena which Hahn said at the time ‘remains a difficult one for newcomers to break into’. It is also designed to reward editors who take a chance on a debut translator and then work with them to make them better.

The Prize is judged this year by literary translator Rosalind Harvey, Bill Swainson, editor at large for non-fiction at Oneworld, and Daniel Hahn, and has been generously supported by The British Council.

A diverse shortlist for the inaugural TA First Translation Prize includes fiction, non-fiction and a graphic novel, representing five languages and six countries – ‘a celebration of new talent, of new voices, skill and risk-taking’.

The winner, announced on 1st March was Bela Shayevich for her translation, from the Russian, of Second-Hand Time by Svetlana Alexievich.

Commenting on the winner the judges said: ‘Bela Shayevich’s translation is a work of extraordinary, sustained virtuosity, meeting the challenges of this huge polyvocal text energetically and fearlessly.’
